Downtown is a cosy lunchroom in the centre of Amsterdam, where you can enjoy a good cup of coffee and a traditional breakfast, but also delicious pancakes and healthy sandwiches. We also have a large and sunny terrace!
Downtown is located in the oldest existing building of Reguliersdwarsstraat, dating back to 1642. It's a fine example of a typical 17th century Dutch house with a storefront.
In 1970, Fokke IJsinga and Frits Blaauw, opened one of the first espresso bars of Amsterdam in this building and called it Coffeeshop Downtown.
The place was meant to be a regular coffee bar, but when more and more gay people came here, the place became the very first open gay café of the city.
By the end of 1979 the coffee bar was taken over by Frans Monsma and Guus Silverentand. With fancy parties, they turned Downtown into the place to be for the hip and trendy.
Downtown stays popular amongst a wide variety of people, so in 2020, we can celebrate our 50th anniversary, making this the longest running business of the street!
